Examining Crime Policies
In my last week with the Safegard Group, I was lucky enough to work with the team of Bill Salmon, Julie McDaniel, and Matt Zwaan in our commercial lines department. One of my projects with the team was to look at our clients’ crime policies and examine their coverages. I was tasked with searching through clients’ crime policies to find their claim expense limit coverage amount, and determine whether or not they had that coverage. Once determined, I wrote emails to various underwriters from the clients’ carriers to inquire about coverage options or possibilities depending on whether or not the client had a claim expense limit coverage. All this was part of the process that Julie, Bill, and Matt go through on a normal basis. It is an important project because we want to make sure our clients have the best coverages possible and are protecting themselves from all the risks that they are exposed to daily when doing business. Working with this team taught me a lot about the technical side of insurance, and exposed me to the fact that each policy has specific parts to it that affect the way the coverages work in crime policies.
Overall, my experience this summer as an intern for Safegard was integral to my development moving forward. It was one of the first true experiences I have had in the business world. I never truly knew how businesses operated, until I was able to see it firsthand and watch the employees at Safegard interact with their clients and fellow employees. I didn’t picture insurance as an industry I would find myself in after college, but after this intern experience, I am definitely more open to the idea. I am thankful to all the Safegard employees for opening their doors to me anytime I had questions for them, bringing me along to meetings, and making me feel welcomed. I look forward to maintaining those relationships in the future and continuing my development as a student, and future member of the work force.
