Join us here each Monday morning this summer for our Intern Update from Lou Copley! Lou will be chronicling his summer internship with The Safegard Group by detailing what he engaging in and his experience with our company.
Intern Update #4: On the Job Experience
On Tuesday, July 19th Joe Abbonizio of Safegard’s Risk Control Department and I traveled into the city to check in on a couple of our client’s construction jobs. I had the opportunity to go up on the roof of one of the buildings and speak with some of the foremen about what they do every day. Joe also informed me about possible safety violations and dangerous working conditions. There was no issue with either of the sites we visited, but while walking through the city he was able to point out a couple violations he saw on other sites. We also stopped by the new Comcast building, which is set to become the largest building in the entire city. Although we weren’t able to get onto the site, the gigantic foundation of the building is truly something to marvel at.
Aside from being in Philadelphia all day Tuesday, I spent the rest of last week with Safegard’s Personal Lines Department. I was able to meet with Vice President Andy Pillion, and he outlined the three projects that he had for me. The first was updating the Personal Insurance Exposure Analysis Word document which is filled out by clients in order to obtain necessary information. The second project involved organizing T-files, which haven’t been used here since 2014, and shipping them off-site. My third and final project with the Personal Lines Department was to write an article regarding the Assignment of Benefits. The article touched on remediation companies taking advantage of home owners who have suffered damage to their home from a fire, flood, etc. via their insurance providers. The article should be posted onto the blog shortly.
As for this week, the majority of my time was spent organizing the file cabinets for the Administration Department, receiving and attaching policies into AMS, and scanning policies. I was also able to travel to the Radnor Hotel with Director of Operations, Michael Hermansen to scout the location as a possible fit for Safegard’s 2016 Christmas Party. Unfortunately, the party takes place during the week of my final exams so I will not be able to make it back up here for it.
With only two weeks left, my Summer internship with Safegard is rapidly coming to an end. Thus far, the work experience that I have gained has been invaluable, and I look forward to learning even more in my remaining days.
