When it comes to data breach incidents involving medical practices, we have all heard the cliché, “It is not a matter of IF, but a matter of WHEN.” For Women’s Health Care Group (WHCG), a prominent Philadelphia-area OB/GYN medical practice, this is no longer just cliché, but a painful reality.
In May 2017, WHCG discovered that a server and workstation had been infected by a virus that allowed external hackers access to their systems compromising at least 300,000 patient records.
As featured in the Pennsylvania MGMA Special Bulletin, Safegard’s Healthcare Practice Leader, Brian Courtney, has released a call to action for all medical practices to evaluate their protections from a Cyber Security perspective. This comes on the heels of a massive data breach involving a local medical practice. If you have questions or concerns on where you can make improvements, please contact me at bcourtney@safegardgroup.com or via our contact page.
